Pasture Pro might be an app you’ve heard of in farming circles. But how does it fare against Pasture.io’s Pio, Australia and NZ’s leading global pasture management app?

From comparing origins, features, capabilities and customer support to pricing, we break down the differences in this helpful guide.

While a growing number of pasture management apps appear on Google Play and Apple’s App Store, some are in very early stages and do not offer a suite of innovative technology to deliver quality, reliable data or a satisfactory user experience.

That’s why we’re looking at Pasture Pro, another paid subscription service like ours that uses multiple technologies to ensure precision farming and pasture productivity at every step.

What is Pasture Pro?

Pasture Pro is an ‘all-inclusive Ranch Management’ app for farmers, built by AG Innovations, based in Snyder, Texas, USA.

This American company is dedicated to building tech-based products to help boost profits for farmers and ranchers. With the Pasture Pro app, Ag Innovations prides itself on delivering solutions to ensure landowners can oversee every aspect of their property, whether it’s used for farming, hunting, or tourism purposes.

The Pasture Pro app is built to reduce the stress, time, and cost of farm management, even if there is no signal where you are.

Communication between a reviewer and the app creator in the Apple App Store indicates that 2023 is the first year of marketing this app and rolling out key features, meaning this product is new and developing.

Pasture Pro app product features

The features listed are, in some cases, in-app purchases. The Pasture Pro app is free to download, and some are free. Let’s take a look at what these features are.

Livestock management

The Pasture Pro app has a Livestock Management feature, which allows you to track inventory and expenses easily and across teams. It works even without phone reception while you’re out on the land. But, if you can’t be there physically, the app allows you to remotely manage your herd count and condition, productivity, grazing rotations, and sales.

Pricing

You can trial Pasture Pro’s Livestock management feature for 30 days for free. Then, you have a quarterly payment option of $99.90 USD or around $400 USD per year.

According to their website's Livestock Management page, this pricing equals $1.36 USD a day. Yet their Pricing page suggests the whole year fee is $300 USD per year.

GPS ear tags for livestock

Ag Innovations offers a solar-powered ear tag that uses GPS to understand where your livestock are located at all times. These tags use satellite data that communicate with the Pasture Pro app. They are available by contacting the company directly.

Pricing

$150 USD per ear tag and a Livestock Management subscription.

Farming tasks feature

An iPhone-inspired task interface allows you to manage a central to-do list within the app. You can assign jobs, provide text details, drop a location pin and attach images to enhance the experience.

Pricing

Free

On-farm asset monitoring

This feature allows you to monitor physical assets, like water sources, entry/exit points, buildings, or game feeders, from your phone. You can monitor wear and tear via a camera-based system that works even in most remote locations using a combination of cellular and walkie-talkie networks. A maximum of 24 cameras can be connected to this feature.

Pricing

Dependent on the user’s needs and based on the number of cameras you need to connect to the app. The cameras are an additional purchase.

Farm mapping

This tool within the Pasture Pro app allows you to draw land boundaries, set up virtual fencing, measure distance, assist with grazing efforts and map U.S. land parcel ownership data. The latter benefit suggests that this feature may be best only for farmers in the US.

The mapping feature can integrate with the GPS Ear Tags module, allowing you to monitor your herd movements. It also works well with the Tasks feature to pinpoint exactly where an issue on-site needs to be addressed.

Pricing

Free, but the U.S. land parcel data is an additional subscription cost.

Inventory and grazing reporting

The Pasture Pro app allows you to export inventory, grazing, tasks and grazing data as reports to email or via print.

Pricing

Free

There is even an option for US ranchers to apply for PRF (Pasture Range Forage policy) insurance via the app, although there is little online information.

The Nitty Gritty

Pricing

The pricing structure is not wholly clear, as the following in-app purchase prices in the App Store state:

In-App Purchases

  • Livestock & Finance Management $29.99

  • Livestock Management $24.99

  • Parcel Subscription $24.99

  • US Parcel Map $24.99

  • Finance Management $8.99

This differs from what appears on the website, making it confusing for prospective clients.

The website’s Pricing page lists the following in USD:

  1. Livestock Management is $300/year ($250 if you have Finance Manager)

  2. Finance Manager is $100/year ($50 if you have Livestock Management)

  3. US Parcel Layer, is $24.99/year

  4. GPS Ear Tags are $150/tag with Livestock Management subscription

  5. Asset Monitoring dependent on number of cameras

Some terms are also inconsistent, so it is difficult to assess the true cost of using Pasture Pro.

Capabilities

  • One sign-up for unlimited users: great when you have a team working for you

  • App can be used even without cellular service

A low number of downloads to date indicates that the app and the business model are in very early stages and may not have the team or historical data behind it to assist you if you go this route. Yet.

So, how does this compare to pasture.io? Let’s dive into it.
